If something's been real, and it's been fun, how could it possibly not have been real fun?

I wonder why people say "to tell you the truth". It's like everything else was a lie ?
Also, why is it that when something bad happens to someone, they say "he was in the wrong place at the wrong time". could it not have been "the wrong place at the right time" OR "the right place at the wrong time" ?
